From 1 January 2026, the Netherlands applies a half-rate motor vehicle tax to qualifying motorhomes instead of the former quarter-rate, doubling the tax for this group. Owners who do not use their motorhome for four to six months can suspend registration to stop the tax; during suspension, a valid roadworthiness test and third-party liability insurance are not required. However, cancelling the entire policy also removes comprehensive coverage that may protect against fire, theft or storm damage. The Dutch Association of Insurers advises keeping motorhome and caravan insurance active during winter storage, as storage operators are often not liable for such damage.
