In Brief

A proposed £1.30 per person per night tourism levy in Wales would disproportionately increase costs for caravan and motorhome owners, with a family of five facing a 26% hike, while five-star hotel guests pay just 1% more.

Disproportionate impact

The Welsh government plans to introduce a tourism levy of £1.30 per person per night, applicable to all types of accommodation. Industry associations warn that this will hit budget caravan and motorhome holidays the hardest.

For a family of five paying an average of £25 for a campsite pitch, the levy represents a 26% cost increase. In contrast, for a guest at a five-star hotel, the same charge amounts to just 1% of the bill.

Calls for revision

The Caravan Club and the park association are urging the government to reconsider the system and introduce a single low rate for all campsite pitches, arguing that the current proposal unfairly equates budget holidays with luxury hotel stays. The levy is scheduled to take effect in 2027.

Scotland fan travels in 1977 motorhome with football graphics

John McIntosh from Falkirk bought a 1977 Airstream Argosy motorhome decorated with images of Scottish footballers, including Archie Gemmill, Graeme Souness, and Scott McTominay. Instead of traveling to the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, he decided to tour Scotland to meet former colleagues and fans. McIntosh cited a lack of understanding of soccer in the US as the reason for not attending the tournament.
