Police in Viersen and fire experts have determined the cause of the fire at the campsite in Niederkrüchten-Brempt on June 3: a technical defect in an electric water pump. Arson or outside interference has been ruled out.
According to police, the fire destroyed five caravans, damaged a car and several outbuildings. However, initial reports from the morning of the same day mentioned six caravans destroyed, along with several cabins and utility buildings. The number of injured also differs: one report says a 41-year-old female tourist suffered mild smoke inhalation; another says three people were slightly injured, one with smoke inhalation.
Around 70 emergency responders were on scene. The case has been referred to the public prosecutor's office.
