Catalonia has tightened controls on overnight stays in motorhomes and campers. Regional legislation equates raising a van's roof to setting up camp, even if the vehicle's dimensions are not exceeded. The national DGT instruction allows sleeping inside the vehicle without extending beyond its perimeter, but regional authorities interpret raising the roof as exceeding dimensions and therefore camping.
Fines range from €60 in urban areas to €3,000 in natural parks. No driving license points are deducted.
