Spain's traffic authority DGT has published instruction PROT 2026/04, tightening technical control for motorhomes and converted vans. The fine for an overdue inspection or unresolved serious defects is €200, reduced to €100 if paid within the first 20 days.
Under the new rules, campers (category N) require annual inspection up to 10 years, then every six months. Motorhomes (category M) require inspection every two years after 4 years, and annually after 10 years. Municipalities retain the right to limit parking time and prohibit overnight stays outside designated areas.
The motorhome fleet has grown from 48,000 in 2015 to nearly 137,000 in 2025.
