The author recounts two years of solo van travel across the US. The first trip ended with the van stuck in mud, but strangers called the sheriff who pulled it out. Later, an elderly couple on an island became surrogate grandparents, and a mechanic in the desert taught repairs. These encounters, the author says, restored faith in humanity.
