At the start of the holiday season, police in North Rhine-Westphalia are offering free weighing of motorhomes and caravans in Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Bornheim and Gütersloh. The campaign is preventive: exceeding the weight limit by 10% results in a fine, by 20% in vehicle confiscation. In Gescher, drivers receive loading advice at a training ground.
In the Gütersloh district, 4,924 motorhomes are registered — a new record. On 17 July, police will hold a free weighing at the district office car park. Specialists will check axle loads and give loading tips. Overweight fines in Germany range from 10 to 235 euros, in other EU countries up to 5,000 euros. The next weighing is planned for early August.
