Styrian roof tents boom

Roof tents for cars are becoming increasingly popular in Austria. The company Wilded from Gamlitz (southern Styria) develops and sells such tents worldwide, with demand remaining high: according to founder Nikolaus Musger, they regularly sell out during the year. The tents weigh between 30 and 80 kg, can be set up in minutes, and accommodate up to six people. Last year, Austria recorded a record number of around 8.8 million overnight stays at campsites, marking the fifth consecutive record year.

Camping in Tyrol: Between Mountains, Lakes and Modern Campsites

Tyrol has more than 100 campsites for summer and around 80 for winter. In summer 2025, Tyrolean campsites recorded nearly two million overnight stays, with many guests from Germany, the Netherlands and Austria. Many sites are being modernised and expanded, including glamping options. The Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, running from 28 August to 6 September, will feature more than 750 exhibitors.

Carinthia, in southern Austria, attracts tourists with over 100 campsites and about 16,000 equipped pitches. The region offers a variety of accommodation options, from traditional tents and motorhomes to glamping with luxury tents and chalets. Among more than 1,000 lakes, Wörthersee, Ossiacher See, Faaker See and Weissensee stand out, with water temperatures often exceeding 25 degrees in summer. Since June 2026, a direct flight from Rome to Klagenfurt has been operating, and the region is reachable by car from Venice, Udine, Trieste and Bologna in a few hours.

Falkensteiner Camping Wörthersee opens after modernization

Falkensteiner Michaeler Tourism Group (FMTG) and Stadtwerke Klagenfurt have officially opened the modernized Falkensteiner Camping Wörthersee campsite at Metnitzstrand. Around 3 million euros were invested in the site's renovation, including a new reception building and the CAMPO restaurant. Further expansion steps are planned. FMTG operates six campsites in Austria and Croatia and aims to develop the site into a leading camping destination in the Alps-Adriatic region.

Caravan trip to the Alps: Fendt Bianco and BMW X3 tested in Tyrol

Auto Zeitung tested towing the Fendt Bianco caravan (weighing nearly 1.4 t) with a BMW X3 (about 400 hp) on Tyrolean roads. The route ran from the Ötztal valley to the Kühtai saddle (2020 m) and back towards Innsbruck. Towing requires getting used to the dimensions, but assistance systems such as the Truma Smart A mover (optional, €2,158) make maneuvering easier. The caravan offers more living space than a motorhome, and the tow car remains available for independent trips.

Austrian Constitutional Court upholds zoning for campsite in Hinterstoder

The Austrian Constitutional Court has ruled that the controversial zoning for a luxury campsite in Hinterstoder (Kirchdorf district) is lawful. The resort opened last year. Community lawyer Berthold Lindner said the court confirmed the municipal council's decision, which weighed both tourism benefits and potential environmental drawbacks. The campsite can remain, and Lindner stated that a successful challenge to the building permit is unlikely.

Four campsites in Tyrol offer diverse options, from winter camping with gas connections to glamping and floating homes. Naturcamping Kuprian in Huben provides 120 winter-proof pitches with gas hookups and 'Bergnester' glamping units priced between €160 and €230 per night. The campsite in Sölden, a short walk from the gondola, is expanding from under 100 to nearly 140 pitches, with summer rates from €49 and winter from €69. Natterer See near Innsbruck features floating homes and other accommodations, with pitches from €83 per night in peak season.

Serious accident on motorway, long traffic jams

On the night before Saturday, there were long traffic jams on the Tauern motorway in the southbound direction. Thousands of holidaymakers from Germany and the Netherlands were on their way to the Mediterranean. An accident near Anger, not far from Walserberg, also caused a major traffic jam in the opposite direction. Four vehicles collided in a rear-end collision, including a truck and a car with a caravan. According to the Red Cross, three occupants were slightly to moderately injured. Police reported that a truck driver braked hard, causing another trucker to swerve onto the overtaking lane, touching the car. The caravan's side walls were torn open, and the towing vehicle overturned.
