In Brief

RV bookings for China's May Day holiday rose nearly 10% year-on-year. New models target families and mobile businesses, but a shortage of equipped campsites poses challenges.

RV Market in China: Trends and Challenges

According to the platform "Fangche Shenghuo Jia", RV bookings for the May Day holiday increased nearly 10% year-on-year, with a more than 20% rise in the last week. The average rental duration was 5.1 days. Users are increasingly making spontaneous decisions, abandoning trains and planes due to rising prices. The highest demand is in Yining, Lhasa, Guiyang, and Fuzhou. The most popular model is the RV90 Class C with lithium batteries, designed for family trips.

New Formats: Mobile Business and Family Models

At an exhibition in Guiyang, compact RVs adapted for mobile businesses were presented. Models drivable with a B-category license are equipped with autonomous water and power systems, allowing them to be used as mobile cafes or shops. An RV based on the Toyota HiAce, about 6 meters long for large families, was also unveiled. The base version costs 550,000 yuan, while a converted version with nine seats, including business-class chairs, reaches 700,000–900,000 yuan. Drawbacks include its length and height, which complicate parking and entry into underground garages.

Infrastructure Issues and Practical Tips

In Qingdao, the growing popularity of RV travel has revealed a severe shortage of equipped parking spots. Of about 30 RV sites in the city, fewer than 10 have full infrastructure, including water and electricity hookups and wastewater disposal. For beginners, recommendations have been published: a passport, a C1/C2 driver's license, and a credit card with a limit of at least 20,000 yuan are required for rental; all passengers must wear seat belts, children must be in car seats in the rear; it is recommended to use a navigation app in "RV mode," avoid underground parking and narrow roads, and obey the 100 km/h speed limit.
