In the municipality of Westerkwartier (Netherlands), occupancy at campsites and motorhome pitches has declined compared to previous years, possibly due to high fuel prices and a doubling of the motorhome road tax. Owners of De Eikenhof pitch in Opende note that tourists stay only a few nights and urge authorities to relax rules, including extending the season beyond November 1. Deputy mayor Richard Lamberts called the leisure sector a 'growth diamond' and said €250 million has been reserved over 30 years to boost tourism in Groningen province and the northern Drenthe municipalities.
