Couple lives in motorhome for four years on 100 euros per week

Ibiza authorities have tightened rules for motorhomes since 2024, prohibiting long-term parking and overnight stays in rural areas. The fine for entering without a permit during high season can reach 10,000 euros, and for parking in a prohibited zone — from 10,001 to 30,000 euros. In summer 2025, a motorhome was fined for both violations, which could total 40,000 euros. Legal stay requires prior booking at an official campsite.

The Spanish Constitution and court rulings recognize motorhomes and campers as dwellings, protecting them from search without a judicial warrant or owner's consent. To qualify for this status, the vehicle must have a sleeping area, kitchen, and toilet. The protection applies only to the living area, not the driver's cab.

A motorhome driver was arrested while attempting to smuggle a large shipment of hashish into Ceuta. Judicial authorities have ordered her preventive imprisonment in Mendizábal prison, where she faces over four years in jail. 600 kilograms of drugs were found in a double bottom of the vehicle. The Civil Guard and Moroccan authorities are investigating how the vehicle managed to pass through border controls.

The Dethleffs Trend I 7057 EBL motorhome, one of the brand's most popular models, has been tested. The 7.4-meter-long vehicle has a base price under €100,000, accommodates up to four people, and has a gross weight of 3.5 tons, allowing it to be driven with a standard category B license. The test vehicle featured a 180 hp diesel engine instead of the standard 140 hp unit.

An analysis shows that buying a camper van to save on vacation is often not justified. The average cost of a camper van is around €40,000, with annual maintenance expenses reaching up to €2,000. For a couple traveling 15 days a year, these funds could finance over 16 years of traditional vacations. Economic viability only emerges with intensive use of the vehicle for more than 60 days per year.

Spain's General Directorate of Traffic has updated the regulations for vehicle technical inspections. Category M motorhomes are exempt from inspection for the first four years, then require it every two years until ten years, and annually thereafter. Category N camper vans based on vans must undergo inspection annually until ten years and twice a year after eleven years.
