Dominique and Jacky, a French retired couple with a combined pension of about €1,000 a month, have spent the past two winters in their motorhome near Agadir, Morocco. In France the sum no longer covered regular restaurant outings, while in Morocco a meal for two of chicken and chips with a salad costs €6, allowing them to eat out every three or four days. For about four months they avoid heating, water and electricity bills on their French home, which partly offsets fuel, insurance, vehicle maintenance and campsite fees. Jacky was declared disabled at 40 after five heart attacks, and Dominique worked in accounting without being declared for years, limiting her pension rights. The couple say many other French retirees winter in the same area.
