Motorhome owners often make mistakes: draining starchy water into the sink, overloading during repairs, misjudging dimensions and weight. This leads to fines, unpleasant odors, and accidents.
Kitchen mistake and odor
Draining water after cooking pasta, rice, or potatoes into the motorhome sink leads to biofilm formation in the gray water tank. Starch settles on the walls, creating a sticky layer where bacteria multiply. Due to flat traps in compact plumbing, the smell quickly enters the living space. It is recommended to collect starchy water and fats in a separate container and dispose of them at designated campsite drains.
Overload and fines
According to BOVAG and KCI, as of December 1, 2025, there were 634,660 caravans and motorhomes registered in the Netherlands. Installing heavy materials (solid countertops, additional batteries) reduces payload and CAN lead to exceeding the permitted mass. This is especially critical for campers up to 3,500 kg (category B). Overloading risks fines, driving bans until unloading, and reduced stability.
Driving and planning errors
The road safety agency warns that driving a motorhome requires more skill. Common mistakes include misjudging dimensions (length up to 8 m, height around 3 m), overloading, increased braking distance, crosswind effects, and blind spots. Beginners also forget leveling blocks, ignore fluid and power checks, violate parking rules, and plan unrealistic distances.
