Germany's Ifeu institute compared greenhouse gas emissions from different holiday types. A night in a hotel generates 22.1 kg CO₂ equivalent per person, while a night in a camper produces 1.8 kg. The data were presented by Assocamp at the Salone del Camper 2026 in Parma. A separate study by Ergo, a spin-off of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, found that a camper produces only 70% of the CO₂ emissions of a car-plus-hotel holiday, where accommodation alone accounts for 42% of CO₂ emissions and 46% of fossil fuel consumption.
