In Spain, motorhomes are now officially considered parked vehicles. The amendment to traffic rules, published in the official gazette BOE, grants them the right to park under the same conditions as passenger cars. Municipalities are prohibited from refusing parking solely based on vehicle type.
However, strict restrictions apply: awnings, tables, chairs and other camping equipment must not be set up, supports and steps are not allowed, and waste water must not be discharged. Violations are treated as camping outside permitted zones and can result in fines of up to 200 euros in urban areas and up to 5000 euros in nature reserves.
The association Aseicar (also referred to as ASEICAR) called the amendment a historic step, which the industry had been seeking for over 15 years. Motorhome owners, however, remain skeptical, fearing that municipalities will continue to impose their own restrictions.
