New parking rules for motorhomes in Spain
From October 1, 2026, new parking rules for motorhomes and campers come into force in Spain. According to the updated General Traffic Regulations, when parked it is prohibited to extend awnings, open swing windows and take chairs or tables outside the vehicle. It is allowed to open hatches and raise the roof, but the vehicle must stand only on its wheels, with chocks if necessary, and must not leak fluids.
Fines and restrictions
Violations are classified as minor, serious or very serious and carry fines from 750 to 3000 euros. The Coastal Law prohibits parking and overnight stays in the six-metre coastal strip, with fines from 50 to 150 euros. In natural parks and biosphere reserves, overnight stays are usually prohibited, although special zones may be designated.
Legal basis
The Spanish government included in the Traffic Regulations the conditions under which a motorhome is considered parked rather than standing. Royal Decree 518/2026, published in the BOE on June 26, will enter into force on October 1. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) had already applied this criterion in a March 2026 instruction, which classified awnings, chairs, tables, levelling devices and supports as such elements. Municipalities can still regulate parking places and times through their own ordinances.
