European countries find balance between camper tourism and local residents

The Provincial Council of Ciudad Real announced the upcoming launch of a subsidy program for the maintenance of motorhome areas. A total of €440,000 will be distributed among 27 municipalities offering such services. Of these, 20 areas are part of the council's network, providing 245 parking spaces. Council President Miguel Ángel Valverde questioned the network's sustainability, noting that without subsidies many areas cannot cover maintenance costs.

Researchers from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have published a study proposing parking limits for motorhomes on 24 beaches on the northern coast of Fuerteventura (between El Cotillo and Corralejo). The physical capacity of the beaches was estimated at 7,761 people, but after accounting for wind, rain, bird sensitivity, and lack of services, the effective capacity drops to 557 users. Based on this, the study recommends 159 parking spaces for the entire analyzed coastline to prevent unregulated parking and environmental damage.

Spain's DGT has started fining drivers who tow a trailer or caravan without carrying a fire extinguisher. The regulation applies to all vehicle combinations, including cars with light trailers. The fine for not having a certified, accessible extinguisher is up to 200 euros.

Spain has no right to roam; private land access is restricted. Motorhomes may park on public roads for up to 7 days, but coastal municipalities often limit this to 24–72 hours. Caravans must remain hitched to the towing vehicle and are effectively banned from overnight parking on public roads. Official campsites or guarded Áreas de autocaravanas (€5–€15 per night) are recommended for safety and compliance.

The Provincial Council of Seville has allocated €30 million over three years to expand tourist infrastructure in 60 municipalities. Funds will be used to build campsites, hostels, guesthouses, and motorhome parking areas. The first phase (€10 million) already funded projects in 21 municipalities; the second phase (€20 million) targets 40 locations, mostly with fewer than 5,000 residents. Maximum subsidy per project is €500,000, and facilities must be publicly owned.

Police in Oviedo have arrested a person suspected of setting fire to a motorhome parked in the La Bolgachina area. The incident occurred on Friday morning, with a thick black smoke plume visible for several kilometers. The owners had previously filed two complaints with police after the lock was broken and the vehicle was entered. Firefighters contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby cars, but the motorhome sustained major damage.
