Spain's General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has published instruction PROT 2026/04, which standardizes the rules for passing the technical inspection (ITV) for vans converted into living quarters. The document does not introduce new taxes or a separate inspection for campers, but clarifies that the ITV frequency depends on the vehicle category stated in the technical certificate.
If a camper is classified as a motorhome (category M1), it undergoes ITV like a passenger car: first after 4 years, then every 2 years until 10 years, then annually. If it is registered as a camper van (category N1), the schedule is stricter: first ITV after 2 years, then every 2 years until 6 years, annually until 10 years, and then every 6 months.
The key takeaway: two outwardly identical campers may have different ITV schedules depending on the entry in the technical certificate, affecting costs and maintenance planning. According to other sources, the change is based on a 2018 Supreme Court ruling, which also allows municipalities to restrict parking time and prohibit overnight stays of such vehicles on city streets.
