The Downside of Traveling with Motorhomes and Caravans in Spain

The Ibiza City Council has notified residents of a caravan settlement that they must vacate the private land by April 29. Approximately 80 people, including Elena Núñez, are requesting an alternative plot, threatening to move their caravans onto the streets otherwise. According to the Red Cross, last July the island had 1,200 people living in 655 substandard dwellings.

According to the CamperDays platform, 53% of motorhome bookings by Spanish travelers for Easter 2026 are for Edinburgh. Total bookings increased by 70% compared to 2025, with 77% of destinations being in Europe. The main clients are couples (75%), and the average rental duration is seven days.

Living in a motorhome is gaining popularity in Spain, but legislation does not consider it official housing. The key distinction is between parking and camping, with rules set by municipalities. The main obstacle is registration in the population register (empadronamiento), which usually requires a fixed address.

Spain's Civil Guard clarified key regulations for recreational vehicles in a short video. Caravans have a speed limit of 90 km/h on highways and 80 km/h on conventional roads, and passengers are prohibited from being inside a moving trailer. Technical inspection for caravans over 750 kg is required first at 6 years, while for motorhomes it's at 4 years.

Dicot Designs has introduced the Mesa camper van based on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, designed for remote travel. The vehicle features all-wheel drive, BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, an Apex Precision System for rapid tire pressure adjustment, and an Evictus pneumatic suspension kit. The fuel tank capacity has been increased to 170 liters, providing a range of approximately 1500 km, and the roof is equipped with a solar panel and a tent.

On March 17, the Toro City Council will officially reopen the renovated motorhome area. The site has capacity for 12 vehicles and features a digital payment system, automatic access, and an eco-sanitary point.
