Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has confirmed the development of a fully electric version of the California camper based on the ID. Buzz. The new ID. California Cruise concept will be presented at the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf, running from August 28 to September 6. This is the brand's first electric recreational vehicle. More electric California models are expected in the coming years.
The California line, whose 250,000th unit was delivered in July 2026, now spans models from the Caddy to the Crafter. Technical details of the concept have not yet been disclosed, but it is expected to be close to the production version. The current California is available with a 2.0 TDI diesel producing 150 hp, a 2.0 TSI petrol with 204 hp, and an eHybrid version with a combined output of 245 hp and an electric-only range of up to 86 km. An eHybrid 4MOTION version with 180 kW has also been announced.
The show will also feature a modular furniture concept for the California Beach, developed together with Stuff Bubble. The manufacturer has announced new options for the current California, including an electric tailgate, an improved heating and climate control system with night mode, and a new nozzle for supplying warm air to the sleeping area. In addition, an exclusive California Ocean “Generation” special model and an aerodynamic body kit from ABT Sportsline will be shown. In July, the 250,000th California was produced in Hanover and handed over to a customer from Munich.
According to Italian sources, the expected battery is 79–86 kWh, with a range of up to 480 km. US sales are in question due to a 25% tariff on vehicles produced in Germany.
