Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles (VWN) has officially confirmed the development of the electric camper ID. California Cruise based on the ID. Buzz. The concept will premiere at the Caravan Salon 2026, running from August 28 to September 6 in Düsseldorf. It is the first in a new line of fully electric motorhomes, to be rolled out in stages until 2028.
The published image shows a version with two sliding doors and an integrated bed. Earlier reports suggested the project could be cancelled due to weight: equipment similar to the California Ocean would increase the mass to three tons, leaving only 500 kg of payload. To reduce weight, VWN has developed an inflatable kitchen and a modular bed for the California Beach, which can be quickly installed and removed. The kitchen weighs less than 10 kg, the bed 12 kg in the double version and 6 kg in the single version. The ID. California Cruise is expected to be available in standard and long versions, with battery and motor details to be revealed later.
According to Italian sources, the new model is developed together with Stuff Bubble and will feature an inflatable kitchen with sink and water supply, as well as an ultra-light mattress for one or two people. These solutions do not turn the vehicle into a full-fledged motorhome, but are aimed at adventure enthusiasts. According to Spanish sources, the model will feature an 82 kWh battery (77 kWh usable) and a range of about 420 km on the WLTP cycle. VWN also plans to expand the electric camper lineup by 2028, including versions based on the e-Transporter, e-Caravelle and e-Crafter. The range will be from 359 to 485 km, with charging support up to 200 kW. A new European driving licence directive will allow driving motorhomes up to 4.25 tonnes with a category B licence, but its implementation in Germany is not expected before 2029.
