In Brief

German company Sealander unveiled an amphibious trailer that works as a camper and a boat. Prices start at 38,000 euros.

German company Sealander has presented an amphibious trailer that can be used as a camper and as a boat. The design includes a fiberglass hull, galvanized chassis, and sealed hubs. The trailer weighs 600–700 kg and can be towed without a special license.

For water travel, an outboard motor is required: according to one source, 6 hp, according to another, 10 hp. The motor is purchased separately. The trailer can handle waves up to 30 cm. The base price is 38,000 euros, while another source says from 39,750 euros, and with options it can exceed 40,000 euros.

Inventor Daniel Straub presented the Sealander in 2015, and it is still sold today. The manufacturer claims the trailer meets all safety standards both on land and on water. The caravan features a monocoque fiberglass hull, is rated for a weight of up to 750 kg, and can be used on rivers and lakes with waves up to 30 cm. In some countries, including France, no special permit is required for water operation.

According to a French publication, the model was first presented in 2011 at a show in Düsseldorf. On water, the caravan can reach speeds of up to 5 knots (about 10 km/h) with a 5 hp motor, while the maximum engine power is 10 hp. Inside, there is a sleeping area measuring 151 x 205 cm and space for six people. Used units cost around 15,000 euros.

Two innovations for RV travel: electric bike lift and folding caravan

The German company Dethleffs presented the C.Fold folding caravan concept at the CMT show in Stuttgart, designed for towing by electric cars. The structure, with a height of 1.65 m and a width of 1.90 m when folded, reduces aerodynamic drag and, according to the manufacturer, can save up to 100 km of electric vehicle range compared to a conventional caravan. The model weighs 775 kg, when unfolded it reaches a length of 5.45 m with a ceiling height of 1.90 m, and includes a kitchen and a foldable bathroom.

Martin Vaculík and Volkswagen Grand California 600: When You Don't Know Where to Touch

Journalist Martin Vaculík tested the Volkswagen Grand California 600 based on the Crafter and noted that operating its functions requires technical knowledge. He praised the 2024 update (gearshift under the steering wheel, electronic parking brake) but criticized the inconvenient access to gas cylinders and the inaccurate gas level indicator. He also mentioned that engine issues concern models built before 2021, and for full comfort recommends installing a LiFePO auxiliary battery and an inverter.
