In the Dutch nature reserve Grolloërveen (Drenthe), a camper that got stuck on a wooden bicycle bridge has been successfully recovered. The incident occurred on Friday when the driver followed GPS instructions and accidentally turned onto a pedestrian path not designed for heavy vehicles. The decking gave way under the weight, partially destroying the bridge.
Initially, Staatsbosbeheer (the State Forest Service) considered laying road plates to reverse the camper out, but the boggy terrain complicated the operation. Damage was estimated at 30,000–40,000 euros, and the bridge had been scheduled for repair before the incident. However, the rescue went faster than expected: damaged planks were replaced with plates, allowing the owner to drive off on his own. A Chinook helicopter, suggested by many, was not needed.
