Several incidents involving illegal traveller encampments occurred in France in May 2026.
Longvic (Côte-d'Or)
Since 16 May, around 160 caravans (some sources say 130) have occupied private land. An attempt to illegally connect to the electricity grid caused a short circuit and a fire at an Enedis substation, leaving a neighbourhood without power. The mayor filed a complaint on 18 May. Mayor Céline Tonot (PS) said the municipal site was closed due to damage, with repairs expected by 31 May. The community claims to have received verbal permission from the town hall and promises to leave within a week to ten days. The town hall denies any agreement and is preparing an eviction order. Damage to fences and accumulation of waste have also been reported.
Toulouse (Haute-Garonne)
On 19 May, about a hundred caravans illegally occupied the Argoulet leisure centre. The town hall began eviction proceedings by filing a court claim.
Yvelines
On 12 March 2026, the Versailles Administrative Court of Appeal rejected an environmental association's lawsuit, clearing the way for a 200-caravan site in Carrières-sous-Poissy and Triel-sur-Seine. The 5.8-hectare site will operate from April to September. The ruling ends a legal process that began in the 2000s.
