Residents of the Scottish Isle of Skye are voicing anger over the behaviour of tourists travelling in motorhomes and campervans. Reports indicate visitors leave rubbish, faeces and toilet waste, and urinate in front of houses and on roadsides.
The island, home to around 10,000 people, receives tens of thousands of tourists each year. According to the BBC, more than 30,000 such vehicles visit the Scottish Highlands annually, many heading to Skye. The island has only ten public toilets.
Scotland's Outdoor Access Code permits wild camping provided campers act responsibly, including burying faeces, but some tourists fail to follow these rules. Overnight parking of campervans on verges is not allowed by the Scottish nature agency NatureScot.
