Malaysia's first high-altitude RV campsite to open in June

Retired couple T. Faisal Laksamana (65) and Dr. Indriati (61) arrived in Kuching, Malaysia, as part of the The Great Overland Journey Indonesia–Southeast Asia–Mecca–Europe 2026–2027 expedition. They departed Jakarta on July 13, 2026, crossed the border at Entikong, and plan to ship their vehicle by sea from Kuching to Port Klang. The expedition will cover countries in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe and is scheduled to last until 2027.

Malaysia's Transport Ministry reported that as of July 2026, more than 1,450 recreational vehicles — including motorhomes, caravans and campervans — have been registered nationwide. The ministry officially recognises them as legal road vehicles and supports the segment as a growth niche for the automotive industry and domestic tourism. Local manufacturers and foreign investors are already setting up production plants. Vehicle financing is governed by the 1967 Hire-Purchase Act, with banks assessing applications based on market value and risk.

Malaysia's Ministry of Transport (MOT) stated that more than 1,450 recreational vehicles (RVs), including motorhomes, caravans and campervans, have been registered for private use in the country. The ministry confirmed that RVs are legal vehicles and can be registered and licensed by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). The government encourages the RV industry as a high-potential niche segment contributing to the automotive chain and domestic tourism. Regarding hire-purchase facilities, MOT noted that vehicle financing remains subject to commercial assessment by banks under the Hire-Purchase Act 1967 (amended 2025).

GWM (Great Wall Motors) launched the WEY G9, a plug-in hybrid MPV priced under 300,000 ringgit, targeting the segment dominated by Toyota Alphard and Vellfire. During a test drive, the vehicle transported 9 people (7 adults, 2 children) with luggage from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru and back over 3 days. Fuel and charging costs totaled about 200 ringgit. The third row proved usable for short trips, while the second row features power adjustment, massage, and ventilation.

Under the 1991 Vehicle Regulations, installing curtains or blinds on car windows is illegal in Malaysia, except for motorhomes and buses. Violators face fines of 150 to 300 ringgit. Motorhomes may use curtains only in the living area, not on the driver's side windows.

The Selangor state government announced plans to develop ecotourism in Sabak Bernam. The project includes building a nature resort, motorhome and caravan camping sites, and multiple interconnected tourist stops. The aim is to attract more visitors and extend their stay, following a model similar to New Zealand. Emphasis is placed on environmental sustainability and mangrove conservation.
