The popularity of motorhomes in Germany continues to grow: according to GDV, 900,000 units were insured in 2024. The decision to buy or rent depends on financial factors, including price, insurance, and depreciation.
Why motorhomes dominate
Motorhomes (Reisemobile) are significantly more popular than caravans (Wohnwagen), although the latter are cheaper to buy and maintain. The average price of a motorhome exceeds 120,000 euros, while a caravan costs around 30,000 euros. The main reasons are ease of use (no special driving license required, easier parking) and a psychological factor: many people are afraid of towing a trailer.
The market is responding: at the Caravan Salon, 166 motorhome brands are presented versus 20 caravan brands, and some manufacturers have raised caravan prices by up to 30% without technical innovations.
