In Spain, families with children are forced to live in motorhomes on industrial estates due to the housing affordability crisis. In Palma de Mallorca, the informal settlement at Son Hugo has grown from 20 vans to over 200 caravans in four years, housing nearly 400 people. José, father of a three-month-old baby, bought a caravan because the average rent on Mallorca exceeds €1,700 per month while wages are around €1,500. Residents are not asking for free housing but for basic sanitation: rubbish bins and grey-water disposal points.
