According to Eurostat and INSETE, the EU recorded 413 million camping overnight stays in 2025, up 28.5% from 2015. In Greece, despite 293 campsites in 2024, camping accounts for less than 1% of total tourist flow, compared to the European average of 13.4%.
Greece's new tourism planning plan, approved in August 2026, does not include a separate strategy for camping and caravanning. Campsite infrastructure is outdated, with most being two- and three-star facilities.
A police circular from February 2026 allows motorhomes up to 7.5 meters to park outside campsites, but without setting up camp. Previously, the law and traffic code banned such parking, sparking protests. Motorhome owners complain of fines and a lack of equipped parking areas.
