Begoña Iglesias, 60, a parking attendant in Port d'Andratx on Mallorca, and her 22-year-old son Héctor, a waiter in Palma, live in a caravan of four square meters. They were evicted from their apartment in 2022; after six months living in a car, they moved into the caravan.
With Begoña's salary of 1200 euros per month, they pay 250 euros for parking, but cannot rent accommodation: renting a room costs 1400 euros. According to a 2025 survey by the National Statistics Institute (INE), 10.6% of those seeking housing in the Balearic Islands did not find it, three points above the Spanish average (7.6%).
