From July 7, 2026, new EU requirements on driver assistance and safety systems (regulation GSR II) apply to motorhomes registered for the first time. According to Wolfgang Schmidt, head of the TÜV station in Teindeln, mandatory systems include emergency braking assist, lane keeping assist, fatigue warning, intelligent speed assist (ISA), tire pressure monitoring, reversing assistance, distraction warning, and an alcohol interlock interface. For motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes, systems protecting cyclists and pedestrians when pulling away and turning are added.

The requirements apply only to new vehicles first registered after July 7, 2026. If the base vehicle was already registered before that date, it can be converted into a motorhome without applying the new rules. For imported vehicles from non-EU countries, an individual inspection is required.

According to estimates, the cost of new vehicles will rise by 1000–3000 euros, although dealers note that many manufacturers have already included these systems without significant price increases. Old vehicles benefit from grandfathering, and retrofitting most systems is impossible. Self-builders will face stricter requirements when registering converted vans after the specified date.
