Magistrate Anna Maria Venturrelli of Ravenna annulled two fines totaling about 300 euros (114 and 164 euros) issued by local police in July and August 2021 to a Roma woman for parking her camper on the square in front of the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe.
The judge ruled that parking a camper is not camping if the vehicle does not rest on the ground, produces no wastewater, and does not occupy more of the roadway than its dimensions. The presence of a hammock, children's toys, and laundry drying on the windshield were not considered signs of camping but part of ordinary stopping.
The ruling also questions municipal rules that describe "actions equivalent to camping," including setting up chairs and tables, which the defense says discriminates against the Roma lifestyle. The family's lawyer stated an intention to challenge similar fines from June of the same year.
