Bulgaria's tourism minister, Ilin Dimitrov, told parliament that the ministry will identify places with potential for camper tourism by June 2027. He was answering a question from Dimo Drenchev of the Vazrazhdane party.
According to the National Tourist Register, Bulgaria had 78 categorised camping sites as of October 2026. Between January and August 2026, the Unified Tourist Information System recorded almost 20,000 overnight stays at campsites, 43% of them in inland areas. Dimitrov said the figures do not cover all camper van travellers because no system tracks them. In Europe, more than 215,000 new camper vans and caravans were registered in 2025.
The minister said Bulgaria should become a destination for stays, not just a transit route. By the end of 2027 the ministry plans to identify at least 100 tourism sites in need of investment planning, including motorhome stopovers, urban service stations and supporting infrastructure. Funding is planned for the period from 2028 to April 2030. In September, a dedicated Camping section was set up within the Tourism Reform Council. The ministry will consider a proposal from the Bulgarian Camper Society for a national network of camper stops, municipal camping points and service facilities. Dimitrov also said parking, camping and servicing must be clearly separated in law by June 2027.
