In Brief

Camping and motorhomes are becoming increasingly popular: in France this type of holiday is recognized as a favorite among many families, while Bulgaria shows one of the highest growth rates in the EU

Camping and motorhomes are becoming the preferred type of holiday for the French, according to a TF1+ report. The story features four families: Belgian friends who return to the same campsite every year; a family trying winter camping; a family traveling the world in a motorhome; and a large family taking on the challenge of mobile travel.

Bulgaria also shows significant growth: according to Eurostat data for 2025, the number of overnight stays in campsites in the country increased by 8.4% to 153,700, well above the EU average growth of 1.1%. Veselin Vulev, founder of Camping.bg, noted that after the pandemic, demand for outdoor recreation increased, accelerating the development of camping tourism. He recorded a steady increase in interest in motorhomes and caravans, especially among people aged 35-60, and emphasized the need to develop infrastructure in Bulgaria.

In Sofia, the 12th exhibition will be held from May 10 to 12, where new models will be presented and manufacturers from several countries will gather.

Bulgaria restricts car and caravan access to dunes near Krapets

Authorities in the Bulgarian municipality of Shabla have restricted parking of cars and caravans on the sand dunes of Krapets-North beach, part of the Natura 2000 network. The measure aims to protect dune formations and reduce waste: the municipality annually removes over 500 tonnes of trash from wild camping sites, spending more than 120,000 leva on cleanup. Fines will be enforced from October 2026, with a warning period currently in place. Instances of damaged signs and fences have already been reported. Local opinions are divided: some support the restrictions, others fear a decline in tourism and harm to local businesses. Authorities are reviewing applications for legal camping areas with infrastructure.
