Camper van boom in Italy: new tech, younger renters, and record sales
Original source: La Stampa

In Brief

In 2025, over 44,000 camper vans were sold in Italy, with new registrations up 10.56%. Surveys show 57.7% of new clients come from traditional tourism, and over 50% of renters are under 35.

Italy's camper van market is surging. In 2025, more than 44,000 units (new and used) were sold; new registrations rose 10.56% year-on-year. The tourism ministry allocated €24 million to upgrade parking facilities in 169 municipalities.

According to an Assocamp survey of 52 dealers, 57.7% of new clients previously chose hotels or resorts, and 38.5% second homes. Top reasons: freedom of planning (65.4%) and the ability to travel with pets or sports gear (48.1%). The main audience is couples aged 50–65 (55.8%) and families aged 35–50 (44.2%).

Meanwhile, over 50% of renters are aged 25–34, boosting demand for compact models and short trips (4–6 days). Booking volumes have grown more than 480% since 2020.

The Parma Motorhome Salon (12–20 September 2026) will showcase new models with bright spaces, adjustable beds, and separate bathrooms. Notable designs include Mobilvetta Fluideen (ADI Design Index 2025), Etrusco (German Design Award 2026), and Wingamm with Rubelli bio-based fabrics.

A Yescapa survey found that 94.1% of Italians would take a camper trip during a major life event. The top reason is psycho-physical exhaustion (52.9%), followed by starting a new job (43.1%). 38.8% would deliberately choose a place without mobile or internet coverage. 90.4% reported a positive mood impact.

Since April 2025, new EU rules require microchipping and vaccination for pets (25.7% of owners travel with animals).
