While the European caravan market is shrinking, sales in the Netherlands grew by 10% in the first half of the year compared to 2025. According to the European Caravan Federation, the country has 409,000 caravans and about 200,000 motorhomes, with one in twenty Dutch households owning a caravan.
The growth is attributed to the popularity of camping among young families, as well as the doubling of road tax on motorhomes this year, while caravans are not taxed. Dealers note demand for luxury models, but also for light compact caravans due to the rise of electric vehicles with lower towing capacity. Another source cites tradition and preferences of the older generation, as well as lower vehicle tax compared to motorhomes.
