On Thursday evening on road St 2027 between Mertingen and Lauterbach (Donau-Ries district), a motorhome caught fire. The 76-year-old driver noticed smoke from the engine compartment, stopped, and managed to remove a gas cylinder, preventing an explosion. Firefighters extinguished the blaze; no one was injured. Damage is estimated in the lower five-figure range. The road was partially closed for about 1.5 hours. The cause is preliminarily believed to be a technical fault.
During the firefighting, an 18-year-old passenger of a passing car filmed the scene on her phone. Police launched an investigation for invasion of privacy. As the suspect has no permanent residence in Germany, bail was taken from her.
