In Brief

A motorhome belonging to a Swedish couple burned out completely on the A8 in Bavaria. The driver noticed smoke and pulled over, but couldn't extinguish the fire. Damage: 80,000 euros.

On June 21, a motorhome burned out completely on the A8 motorway near Irschenberg (Miesbach district, Upper Bavaria). According to police, the 60-year-old driver noticed smoke and a burning smell around 11:00 a.m., pulled onto the hard shoulder, and flames then erupted from under the right front wheel. Attempts to extinguish the fire with water and a fire extinguisher failed, and the vehicle was completely destroyed.

The two occupants managed to leave the vehicle before it caught fire; no one was injured. Traffic towards Munich was closed for almost two hours (according to other sources, for one and a half hours), causing a multi-kilometre traffic jam in the summer holiday traffic. Damage is estimated at 80,000 euros; a technical fault is suspected. Some sources report the fire started in the engine compartment.
