A series of camper fires occurred across the Netherlands and Belgium over the past week, leaving vehicles completely destroyed.
Timeline of incidents
- June 18, Dronten (Netherlands): A camper caught fire while driving on Elburgerweg (N309) around 14:40–14:45. Some sources cite a spontaneously combusting fuse box, others a distribution panel. The driver pulled over, and all occupants escaped unharmed. The interior burned out completely; the road was temporarily closed in both directions.
- June 21, Oploo (Netherlands): A camper parked on the roadside on Tweede Stichting burned out completely in the afternoon. The owner and family had stopped for a picnic in the woods. Witnesses called firefighters, but the vehicle was already engulfed. Gas cylinder explosions were heard. No injuries; cause suspected to be a technical fault. Due to drought, the fire was upgraded to 'medium' category.
- June 20, Brouwershaven (Belgium): On a campsite at Schouwse Dijk, a fire broke out around 03:00 during a severe thunderstorm, likely due to a lightning strike. The camper was completely destroyed; fire did not spread. No injuries.
- June 8, Rotterdam (Belgium): Around 02:15 on Dordtsestraatweg in Vreewijk, a camper burned out completely. Cause unknown; police are investigating possible arson.
