On the night of May 23–24, 2026, a major fire broke out at Campingplatz Bankenhof in Hinterzarten (Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district, Germany). The fire started around 11:30 p.m. for unknown reasons. It completely destroyed the main building, including the administration and sanitary facilities. The fire was brought under control by 2 a.m.
According to police, one firefighter suffered minor injuries after falling from a ladder (some sources mention a female firefighter). No other injuries were reported among campers or staff. The campsite was fully booked for the weekend; all guests were evacuated. The campsite is temporarily closed until further notice.
Preliminary damage is estimated at at least one million euros. Fire departments from Hinterzarten, Titisee, and Neustadt were involved in the response. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
