Bulgarian authorities order removal of caravans and tents from Karadere beach

Authorities in Bulgaria inspected Karadere beach near Byala in Varna region and found nearly 1,000 motorhomes, campers and tents. Owners must remove their vehicles and tents by August 7, or face fines between 250 and 1,500 euros. The mayor of Byala issued a ban in April on setting up tents and motorhomes in the area, yet the 5-kilometer stretch of beach remains covered with them. The area includes dunes where placing structures is strictly prohibited, as is trampling or damaging plants.

Nearly 1,000 caravans, motorhomes and tents were found on Karadere beach near Byala, Varna Province. Owners must remove them by August 7 or face fines of €250 to €1,500. A ban on placing structures on sand dunes has been in place since April.

Officials from several institutions began warning owners of tents, caravans and campers on the beach at Kara Dere near Byala, Varna region. The joint operation involves the Byala municipality, police, the Forestry Agency and the Regional Environment and Water Inspectorate. A regulation adopted last September bans placing tents and caravans in Kara Dere as of April this year. About 50% of the beach area is occupied by such objects. Fines range from 500 to 1,000 leva, with repeat offences from 1,500 to 3,000 leva; damaging dunes carries fines of 10,000 to 30,000 leva. Owners have been given a deadline to remove their property voluntarily, otherwise it will be forcibly removed.

A joint inspection initiated by the Varna regional administration found almost 1,000 caravans, campers, tents and dozens of vehicles on the four-kilometre Byala–Karadere beach, where such camping is prohibited. The beach is in Zone A, where temporary structures must be at least 500 metres from the shoreline. Each unit received a notice to voluntarily remove by 7 August; otherwise the Byala municipality will enforce removal at the owners' expense. Fines range from 500 to 3,000 leva.

Authorities in Varna are raiding illegal caravans on the beach and dunes of Kara Dere. Fines range from 500 to 30,000 leva. Some owners removed license plates to avoid identification. If not removed by August 7, objects will be forcibly towed.
