In August, the Syracuse Coast Guard and the Local Maritime Office of Portopalo di Capo Passero carried out inspections of coastal businesses for compliance with environmental regulations. Violations of the requirements of the Single Environmental Permit (AUA) regarding wastewater discharge were found.
Owners of two facilities — a campsite and a camper stop in the municipalities of Pachino and Portopalo di Capo Passero — were fined. Each fine ranges from 1500 to 15000 euros; the final amount will be set by the competent office of the Free Municipal Consortium of Syracuse.
