In Brief

Campaign for Real Aires (Campra) has criticised plans by local authorities in the UK to ban campervans and motorhomes from popular tourist spots, arguing such measures are counterproductive for local economies and sustainable tourism.

The Campaign for Real Aires (Campra) has stated that outright bans on campervans and motorhomes in tourist areas are short-sighted and counterproductive. The group argues that instead of restrictions, local authorities should create equipped parking areas modelled on European aires.

Several local authorities have already introduced or are considering such bans. North Yorkshire Council has made permanent a trial ban on overnight parking of motorhomes in coastal areas of Scarborough. Cornwall Council is consulting on a ban on overnight parking on county car parks.

A Campra survey of 6,731 owners found that 88% are dissatisfied with the availability of overnight parking in desirable locations. The group says that introducing European-style aires could boost visits and spending in new areas, especially outside peak season.

Campervan beauty spot ban on motorhomes 'short-sighted'

The Campaign for Real Aires (Campra) described blanket bans on campervans and motorhomes in tourist hotspots as 'short-sighted', arguing they would be unnecessary with better facilities. In May 2026, North Yorkshire Council made permanent a trial ban on overnight parking of motorcaravans in popular coastal locations such as Scarborough. Additionally, vehicles will be prohibited from entering the Falls of Falloch waterfall visitor site near Crianlarich, Stirling, when it reopens this summer after improvements.

Scotland fan travels in 1977 motorhome with football graphics

John McIntosh from Falkirk bought a 1977 Airstream Argosy motorhome decorated with images of Scottish footballers, including Archie Gemmill, Graeme Souness, and Scott McTominay. Instead of traveling to the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, he decided to tour Scotland to meet former colleagues and fans. McIntosh cited a lack of understanding of soccer in the US as the reason for not attending the tournament.
