From May 2026, new parking restrictions for motorhomes and campervans come into force in the UK, aimed at tackling overtourism and environmental damage. North Yorkshire has introduced a permanent overnight parking ban on the coast (11pm–7am) with a £70 fine. Derbyshire's Peak District has introduced 'red routes' with a complete stopping ban, while Cornwall has installed 2-metre height barriers and mandatory zones for self-contained motorhomes ('Aires'). In the Scottish Highlands (NC500), seasonal restrictions and a 2026 rule banning parking with two wheels on the pavement carry fines up to £100.
Campaign group Campra (Campaign for Real Aires) has criticised the bans as short-sighted and counterproductive. A survey of 6,731 owners found 88% dissatisfied with the availability of overnight parking. Campra suggests creating European-style aires instead of bans, arguing this would boost local economies. Over 500,000 motorhomes are registered in the UK.
