River Dart Oktoberfest VW Camp 2026

The River Dart Oktoberfest VW Camp is a three-day air-cooled Volkswagen camping event held in the beautiful setting of River Dart Country Park in Ashburton, Devon. The event brings together VW Bus, Beetle, and campervan enthusiasts for an Oktoberfest-themed autumn camp at one of Devon's most scenic venues — a wooded river valley on the edge of Dartmoor National Park.

At least 50% of vehicles at the event are air-cooled, making it a paradise for fans of classic split-screen and bay-window Buses, early Beetles, and Type 3 models. The Devon countryside and riverside setting make this one of the most atmospheric autumn VW gatherings in the UK, combining the camaraderie of the VW community with a proper camping weekend in Southwest England.

An unauthorised encampment of 14 caravans remains on Furnace Green Playing Fields in Crawley despite a notice to vacate issued on July 17. West Sussex County Council confirmed the encampment was still present as of July 21 and is pursuing court proceedings. Police attended the site on July 17 after reports of criminal damage. A separate encampment of two caravans at Worlds End Recreation Park in Burgess Hill has also received a notice to vacate, with court action to follow.

Pub owner pleads for return of family caravan with sentimental item

Shula Witherford, owner of The Swan Inn in Upton Warren, Bromsgrove, has asked for the return of a family caravan stolen from the pub's rear car park around 1am on July 19. The caravan contained a 'very personal sentimental item' and was taken despite locks and partial blocking by a car. West Mercia Police confirmed the theft report and said the investigation is due to be allocated.

Horse rider escapes injury after campervan collides with horse and drives off

Police are appealing for witnesses after a campervan reportedly collided with a horse and left the scene on the Isle of Wight. The incident occurred at around 11:40am at the junction of Shanklin Road and Redhill Lane between Godshill and Whiteley Bank. The off-white campervan is said to have clipped the horse, sounded its horn, and sped off. Neither the horse nor the rider was injured.

Firefighters issue safety advice for caravan stays after huge park fire

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning for those staying in caravans, mobile homes and campsites this summer. The advice follows a major fire at Oaks Caravan Park in Fyfield Wick, near Abingdon, on July 12, caused by a barbecue. More than 20 caravans were damaged, and five households remain homeless. The service advises against bonfires or campfires on caravan parks and recommends checking site rules before using barbecues, keeping them away from caravans and dry grass.
