According to a study presented in Saxony, the number of overnight stays at campsites in the region grew by 76.6% from 2014 to 2024, reaching 1.1 million (according to one source) or 1.08 million (according to another). This represents 5–5.4% of all tourist overnight stays.
Tourism Minister Barbara Klepsch emphasized the need to improve service quality for motorhome tourists. More than half of the 124 campsites and 312 motorhome parking areas reported a need for modernization investments, especially in sanitary facilities and accessibility.
Interest in the region as a camping destination is low: only 8% of respondents consider it.
