As October begins, more people are heading out camping and on camper van trips, and the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning rises when heaters are used in enclosed spaces. According to the latest data from the Korea Fire Agency for 2023, gas poisoning accounted for 65 of 596 camping-related safety incidents (10.9%), the third most common cause after falls (208 cases, 34.9%) and burns (98 cases, 16.4%). Of 15 cardiac arrests during camping, 11 (73.3%) were caused by gas poisoning, all occurring in tents or camper vans while using charcoal, firewood or heaters. The Korea Consumer Agency analysed 409 campsite incidents reported to its consumer harm monitoring system between 2020 and 2024: all 8 poisoning cases involved carbon monoxide. In 2023, deaths occurred in Gimpo, Gapyeong and Taebaek in tents and vehicles where charcoal, butane stoves or generators had been used.
