The South Gyeongsang Provincial Fire Department (Republic of Korea) has issued a warning about carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in connection with the growing popularity of camping and overnight stays in vehicles (vanlife). The cause is attributed to the use of gas heaters, charcoal, and braziers in tents and vehicles due to large diurnal temperature variations in early summer.
CO is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas undetectable by human senses; its affinity for hemoglobin is 200 times stronger than that of oxygen. Even small amounts can cause hypoxia, loss of consciousness, and death within minutes.
Authorities recommend not using open flames in enclosed spaces, installing portable CO detectors, and ensuring two-way ventilation (opening tent vents or car windows) while sleeping.
