A growing number of people in Spain are using motorhomes and camper vans as permanent housing because rental costs have become unaffordable. According to CaixaBank Research, rents in stressed areas have risen nearly 15%, while buying a used van and converting it costs €10,000–15,000, less than a year's rent. In March 2026, the DGT clarified that sleeping in a legally parked vehicle is not camping, but municipalities are imposing limits on long-term parking.
