Climate change shifts camper routes: Northern Europe gains popularity

In Mendrisio, a camper heading south on the A2 motorway lost part of its body, causing a puncture in the right rear wheel. The vehicle stopped on the roadside, and TCS reports traffic problems and debris on the carriageway between the Mendrisio rest area and Genestrerio. It is not yet known whether other vehicles were involved. A tow truck is expected to recover the camper, which is unlikely to continue its journey in its current condition. Queues are already forming near Melide.

Pablo, a Spanish waiter in Switzerland, has shown on TikTok how he combines a full-time job (42.5 hours per week) with living in a motorhome with his dog Bellota. He structures his day to walk the dog before and after shifts, and uses his two days off to travel around the country, describing them as '48 hours of absolute freedom'.

On the evening of 21 August 2026, police in Kreuzlingen (Thurgau) arrested a 29-year-old man suspected of thefts from several vehicles. Around 23:30, a report was received about a man entering a motorhome on Langgartenstrasse, followed by a theft from a car on Sonnhaldenstrasse. The suspect was found with stolen goods on Haldenstrasse and taken into custody. His possible involvement in other offences is being investigated.

A farmer in Rickenbach rented his field for 10,000 Swiss francs, expecting hot-air balloon flights. Instead, about 50 caravans from Switzerland, France and Belgium settled there.

Strewo, a camper specialist, will inaugurate its expanded site in Waltenschwil (Büelisacker) from August 21 to 23. The new building adds three workstations for motorhome repairs, doubling workshop capacity. Currently about a dozen employees work at the company, with plans to increase staff. A special sale will accompany the opening, as the traditional spring exhibition was canceled due to construction.

The campsite in Horw, Switzerland, will close in 2029, resulting in the loss of 125 pitches for motorhomes and caravans. Despite the camping boom in Central Switzerland, no replacement is planned, and existing campsites are already booked out for months in advance.
